Biography
Dr. Clyde A. Milner II is the emeritus director of the Ph.D. program in Heritage Studies and emeritus professor of history at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. After growing up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and graduating from the university there, he completed his Ph.D. in American Studies at Yale University. Known for his research, writing, and editing on the history of the American West and on Native American history, Milner now applies his interest in American regionalism and cultural identity to the Mississippi Delta and the interdisciplinary, public sector initiatives of Heritage Studies.
Before coming to Arkansas State in 2002, Milner served on the faculty at Utah State University in Logan. For eighteen of his twenty-six years there, he edited the Western Historical Quarterly. He has written or edited seven books most notably The Oxford History of the American West (1994) – a prize-winning volume that he co-edited with his wife, Dr. Carol O’Connor and with Dr. Martha A. Sandweiss of Princeton University. Carol O’Connor is professor of history emerita at Arkansas State and retired Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at ASU. Both Milner and O’Connor are listed as “Distinguished Lecturers” by the Organization of American Historians. They also have jointly written a biography of Granville Stuart, a quintessential nineteenth-century pioneer in the American West. That book, As Big as the West: The Pioneer Life of Granville Stuart was published by Oxford University Press in November 2008 and offered as a featured selection by the History Book Club and an alternate selection by the Book-of-the-Month Club. In October 2012 the Western History Association at its national convention in Denver, Colorado recognized Milner with its lifetime Award of Merit. Milner and O’Connor have two children, Dr. Catherine Thompson and Charles Milner.
