Dr. Gary Edwards, associate professor of history, wrote a guest commentary in a recent edition of The Jonesboro Sun.  In "Arkansas Should Navigate by a New Star," Edwards examined the issues surrounding the debate in the General Assembly regarding the four stars on the state flag, what they represent, and the change he would advocate based on historical context. His commentary is available online.

Dr. Michael B. Dougan, distinguished emeritus professor of history, spoke to the Mid-South chapter of the Grain Elevators and Processors Society during the group's 40th annual meeting and equipment display in Brinkley. Based on his studies of Arkansas agricultural history, Dougan presented "The Strange Saga of Rice: From Africa to South Carolina to Arkansas." Dougan retired in 2006 following a distinguished 36-year career at A-State.

Dr. Amy Gilley, director of general education at A-State Campus Querétaro, presented a paper, "Troublesome Texts: Little House on the Prairie and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" at the recent Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture.  She also was invited to read an excerpt, "March 9," from her novel in progress, Land of a Thousand Rulers, at the same conference. Gilley holds doctorates in architectural design and dramatic arts.

Congratulations to the staff members at First National Bank Arena whose efforts earned a bronze Addy award at the 2019 gala of the American Advertising Federation of Northeast Arkansas. Claire Vickery, graphic designer in Publications and Creative Services, also was a contributor. The Addy, for an advertisement in the direct mail campaign category, included a 3D piggy bank mailed to promoters, encouraging them to book shows with the arena.

Leslie Parker, instructor in graphic design, was chosen recently by Graphic Design USA as a Student to Watch 2019 in recognition of her achievements at Vermont College of Fine Art, where she is a candidate for a Master of Fine Arts degree. Her work focuses on the intersections of design, education and privilege. Nominated by faculty, only two students per school may be selected. See more online.
