Two collaborative articles co-authored by Dr. Lori A. Neuman-Lee, assistant professor of physiology, have been published. The article in General and Comparative Endocrinology provides evidence that hair samples from polar bears can be collected non-invasively to monitor reproductive cycles, critical for assessing population change due to climate change. In Plos One, the researchers found that increased levels of stress among fishers, a threatened carnivore in California, were correlated with lower survival rates.

Research by Dr. Sarah Scott, assistant professor of communication studies, has been published in the anthology, Disability Representation in Film, TV, and Print Media. In her chapter, "How Silence Rhetorically Constructs Deafness in A Quiet Place: The Silent Treatment," Scott analyzes how sound and silence function rhetorically to shape what audiences understand about what it means to be deaf. Dr. Sanjeev Acharya, assistant professor of sociology, co-presented a study of the link between maternal gender discrimination and emotional/behavioral problems among children 7-15 in a European cohort, at the Stanford Maternal and Child Health Research Institute Symposium. He also co-authored articles in Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities and Reproductive Health examining caste differences in hypertension among women in India, and perception and practices of menstruation restrictions in Nepal.

Dr. Steven Muzatko, associate professor and H.B. Foster Bowdon Endowed Chair of Accounting, is co-author of an article in the Journal of Accounting Education. The researchers examined the relationship between state and local spending per capita on higher education and the performance of certified public accountant (CPA) examination candidates. They found the spending rate has a positive marginal effect on exam pass rates among public university students, but not for private.

Dr. Myleea Hill, professor of strategic communication and graduate program coordinator, and Catherine Bahn (right), instructor in strategic communication and director of strategic communication online programs, presented a paper co-authored with Alexus Raymo, a student in the MS in strategic communication online program, at the Western Social Sciences Association virtual conference. The paper concerned the application of the diffusion of innovations model to analyze the impact of COVID-19 and the summer protests.
