Congratulations to Dr. Amanda Mohler, assistant professor of occupational therapy, whose grant application to the Kays Foundation was approved. Mohler will receive funding of $21,653 to purchase assistive technology to be used in a clinical skills laboratory. The assistive technology is the first step in developing the lab for promoting interprofessional education and student learning, including competency and clinical reasoning.

A proposal by Dr. Sarah Davidson, assistant professor of nursing and associate dean, was approved by the Kays Foundation for purchase of a Gaumard HAL S1020 simulation manikin and monitor. This equipment provides new options for hands-on learning in simulation labs and the classroom, along with instant feedback. Faculty will use the monitor in didactic and clinical courses in disaster preparedness, graduate nursing, and undergraduate nursing programs.

Dr. Edward Salo, associate professor of history, recently had two items published in Eunomia Journal of the Civil Affairs Association that supports the U.S. Army’s Civil Affairs regiment. The first work explored the protection of cultural heritage by the U.S. Army during the Civil War, and the second examined cultural heritage protection in Syria during operations against ISIS. Both articles provide lessons learned for future military operations.

Dr. Hilary Schloemer, assistant professor of management, was invited by McGraw-Hill to record a podcast for its Management Insights Series. In “Be Yourself. Lights, Camera, Zoom!” she discusses taking the stress out of teaching via video and shares best practices for being authentic. She also talks in the podcast about how she became comfortable in both synchronous and asynchronous video modalities, and with hearing and seeing herself.

Ana L. Zepeda de Alba, laboratory assistant in natural sciences, Campus Querétaro, is co-author of an article published recently in the journal Ecological Management & Restoration. In the researchers’ study of Australian woodlands, their results emphasize the significance of structural complexity of restoration plantings for supporting the recolonization and persistence of native fauna. At large landscape-scale, they also demonstrate the importance of retaining small habitat elements.
