Dr. Carlitta Moore, assistant professor of athletic training and assistant dean for diversity, equity and inclusion, Nursing and Health Professions, has been selected to participate in the 2023 Emerging Leaders Program, conducted by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Moore is one of 35 higher education professionals selected nationally for the six-month leadership development program. A news release about her selection is online.

A grant proposal by Dr. Mohammad Abrar Alam, associate professor and Beck Professor in Chemistry, has been approved by the Kays Foundation. Titled “Synthesis antibacterial characterization of novel aminothiazole derivatives,” the $12,400 project will help support development of novel antibiotics as part of Alam’s ongoing studies. The work involves both undergraduate and graduate STEM students, from underrepresented groups, working on relevant and cutting-edge supporting research.

The Kays Foundation has awarded a $10,085 grant to Addie Fleming (left), assistant professor, and Dr. Kathryn Flannigan (right), associate professor, nursing, for their proposal, “Enhancing Student Learning through Realism with iSimulate.” The purpose of this project is to provide undergraduate nursing students an interactive and realistic experience in both the didactic and clinical simulation settings. The iSimulate REALTiPlus simulator provides interactive experiences that are directly related to cardiac and obstetrical monitoring.

The research Dr. Argelia Lorence, professor of metabolic engineering and Vaughn Endowed Professor, and her team of investigators are conducting into the impact of climate change on the growth of rice was featured in a front-page article published last week in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. This follows a related feature in the New York Times. Both articles about rice, a major source of the world’s food supply, are available to subscribers. Arkansas is the nation's largest rice producer.

Four staff members in Athletics Media Relations were recognized by College Sports Communicators (CSC) with two awards in the organization’s annual Creative and Digital Design Contest. The 2022 A-State Football Game Notes, written by Mark Taylor, associate director for media relations, and Caleb Garner, assistant director for media relations, were voted fourth in the nation in the University Division’s Fall Sports Game Notes category. The 2023 A-State Baseball Reference Guide, which was written and compiled by Garner with editorial assistance from Jen Hannah and cover design by Adam Eargle, was ranked third in the Spring Sports Media Guides category. The team is led by Jerry Scott, associate athletics director for media relations.
