Military Science & Leadership I (Freshman)
Class
The MS I course is the freshman level course required for cadets who have not attended basic training. This course consists of two semesters and teaches an Introduction to Leadership. Cadets will learn basic soldiering skills, the Army Values, health and fitness, effective communication, and U.S. Military Customs and Courtesies. This year will facilitate a foundation to build on as they progress through the program and prepare themselves for their future careers as Army officers.

MS I is the freshman level course in the ROTC program. Cadets hold the rank of trainee (C/Trainee) during the fall quarter. Deserving Cadet trainees will be promoted for the winter quarter to Cadet Private (C/PVT). During the spring quarter deserving Cadets will be promoted to Cadet Private First Class (C/PFC). Promotion will be based on ROTC performance, undergrad GPA and the recommendation of the Platoon Leader and Platoon Sergeant to the Company Commander and the First Sergeant.
Military Science & Leadership II (Sophomore)
Class
The MSL II class is the sophomore level course required by all cadets who have not completed basic training. Cadets will continue to build a strong foundation of leadership during these two semesters. This class will cover areas such as team building, situational leadership, effective Army briefing, interpersonal communication, effective writing, Army rank and structure, duties, traditions, map reading, land navigation, and an introduction to troop leading procedures. They will be exposed to and given a familiarization to battle drills and patrolling. This year will give them the knowledge to tackle Basic Camp at Fort Knox, KY, before their junior level course.

MSL II cadets hold the rank of Cadet Corporal (C/CPL) during the fall semester. Deserving cadets will be promoted for the spring to Cadet Sergeant (C/SGT). Promotion will be based on ROTC performance, undergrad GPA and the recommendation of the Platoon Leader and the Platoon Sergeant to the Company Commander and First Sergeant.
Military Science & Leadership III (Junior)
Class
The MSL III course is required for all cadets in order to commission as an Army Officer. Completion of MSL I, MSL II, and Leadership Training Course is required for all Cadets who have not completed basic training. Cadets must have a minimum of 60 credit hours in order to enroll in MSL III. In this year cadets will learn tactical leadership including patrolling and squad combat operations. They will become fluent in operations orders and troop leading procedures. They will continue to build on their land navigation and map reading skills. There will be a required two-hour lab each week in which skills learned are put into practical application. Skills gained during this year will help them in Advance Camp at Fort Knox, KY

MSL III Cadets will wear the rank of ether Cadet Staff Sergeant (C/SSG), Cadet Sergeant First Class (C/SFC), Cadet First Sergeant (C/1SG), or Cadet Second Lieutenant (C/2LT). They will get hands on experience in platoon level leadership and hold the position of either Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Leader, or First Sergeant. Cadets will be evaluated and mentored on their performance in these positions.
Military Science & Leadership (IV)
Class
The MSL IV course is required for all Cadets in order to commission as an Army Officer. This is the last stop before obtaining the rank of Second Lieutenant (2LT). Completion of MSL I, MSL II, MSL III, and Leadership Training Course is required for all Cadets who have not completed basic training. Cadets who have attended basic training are only required to take MSL III and MSL IV courses. Cadets must have a minimum of 60 credit hours in order to enroll in MSLIII. In this year Cadets will learn tactical leadership including patrolling and squad combat operations. They will become fluent in operations orders and troop leading procedures. They will continue to build on their land navigation and map reading skills. There will be a required two-hour lab each week in which skills learned are put into practical application.

MSL IV Cadets are placed in either a Command or Battalion Staff position to gain experience in planning and familiarize themselves with battalion operations. Cadets will either wear the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel (C/LTC), Cadet Major (C/MAJ), or Cadet Captain (C/CPT). The Battalion Commander and Staff Commander are responsible for facilitating training for labs and other events.
