As part of the educational mission of the University, the ASU Police Department works to teach the campus community how to best protect themselves and their property. The cooperation, involvement, and personal support of students, faculty, and staff in a campus safety program are crucial to the programs success.
Students, faculty and staff must assume responsibility for their own personal safety and the security of their personal belongings by taking simple, common sense precautions.
Simple Crime Prevention Tips
The following tips will go a long way in ensuring the safety of you and your belongings.
- Do not prop open door that are meant to lock when closed.
- Lock residence hall rooms and offices even when leaving for a short time.
- Mark valuable items with an engraving instrument (UPD will do this for free.)
- Secure bicycles with a secure U style lock.
- After parking your vehicles, keep them locked and all valuables out of sight.
- Report suspicious persons or activity to the University Police at extension 2093.
- Do not hesitate to contact the University Police for an escort.
- Always check around your vehicle before entering.
- NEVER leave your backpack, wallet, laptop, etc. unattended for any reason.
- ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings.
- Always let a friend know where you’re going and when you expect to return.
- Use the student safety patrol escort service.
- Know where emergency blue light phones are located on campus.
- Stay in well-lighted areas and use well-traveled routes.
- Avoid walking or jogging alone. Walk confidently and vary your routes.
- Steer clear of shrubbery, trees or structures that people could hide behind.
- If you think that you are being followed, find other people immediately.
- Be aware of ASU's emergency and crisis procedures and always follow them.
- Be sure to study the Active Shooter Checklist on our website.
- Watch for time sensitive text and email messages from the Emergency Alert System for information concerning your safety.
- Have keys ready before you get to your vehicle so that you don't have to search for them. Lock doors immediately after entry into your vehicle.
- Always remember to remove your keys when your vehicle is unoccupied. Keys left in a vehicle offer a thief an easy opportunity to steal it.
- Try to avoid using ATMs after daylight hours.
