"The National Writing Project believes that teachers are professionals who have knowledge to share." 

The Arkansas Delta Writing Project is a member of the National Writing Project, a network of local sites located in universities across the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In 2009, Arkansas State University established itself as a site of the National Writing Project. The National Writing Project is the most successful, longest-running professional development network in the United States. For thirty years, the NWP has partnered with universities to offer Invitational Summer Institutes and to build cadres of master teachers who, in turn, assist others to grow as writers and teachers of writing.

The goals of The Arkansas Delta Writing Project site focus on improving student writing by developing teachers as writers and as consultants on writing. This focus leads to the celebration and enhancement of the professional role of successful classroom teachers and provides schools with an empowering, research-based professional development model embedded in their communities.

The Goals of The Arkansas Delta Writing Project site:

• To improve student writing through the development of teachers as writers and as consultants on writing
• To provide schools and communities with an empowering, research-based professional development model embedded in local milieus
• To identify, celebrate and enhance the professional role of successful classroom teachers
• To extend the roles of writing as bridges among disciplines
