Philosophy Now: Taylor's Version (PHIL 2103)
Tues & Thurs 12:30-1:45
Sections: Regular (Section 001) & Honors (Section H01)
Instructor: Michele Merritt (mmerritt@astate.edu)
Have you ever found yourself listening to a Taylor Swift song and thinking, this is lowkey philosophical?
• Like when “Mirrorball” has you questioning what it means to truly know yourself
• Or when you are suddenly unpacking gender and power after listening to “Mad Woman”
• Or when you hear “Karma” and wonder if it’s true that what goes around comes around?
This class is your chance to take a deep dive into these questions…for college credit! 🎓
Through Taylor’s music and public life, we’ll examine topics like:
💔 Love, friendship & betrayal (…if you wanted me dead, you should have just said)
⚖ The ethics of revenge (Look What you Made me Do…some Vigilante Sh*t)
👀 Gaslighting & epistemic injustice (They always kill Cassandra first, don’t they?)
🎭 Authenticity vs. living in a curated world (is this the real me or just my Reputation?)
🤯 What even is real anymore? (Wise men once read fake news…And they believed it)
And yes, we’ll definitely be talking about Life of a Showgirl—along with every other Era!
If this sounds like your jam, sign up for: Philosophy Now! (Taylor’s Version).
…Ready for it?
