Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Science (B.S.R.S.)

College: College of Nursing and Health Professions

Department: Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences

Thank you for your interest in the diagnostic medical sonography track of our radiography program! Our sonography program is a continuation of our radiography program. It is a 4-year degree program. Before students apply to sonography, they must first complete an accredited radiography program. We have a radiology application process every October. Applications for the radiography program are due October 31st.

Information regarding the radiography program can be found here. https://www.astate.edu/degrees/bsrs-radiologic-sciences-radiography

Our radiography program is 18 consecutive months, meaning you will attend spring, summer, and fall semesters. Then in the spring of your second year, you will apply for your specialty program. Specialty applications are due April 1st.

The sonography program is 14 consecutive months, that focuses on abdomen, small parts, ob/gyn, and limited vascular. All courses for the radiography and sonography programs are on campus, not online. Clinical rotations are planned in the Northeast Arkansas, West Tennessee, and Southeast Missouri areas.

Bulletin Information and list of classes can be found here. https://catalog.astate.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=9&poid=2807&returnto=272

*We are currently looking to make changes to the prerequisites and application process, so this information is subject to change.

Junior Year

Radiography:  provides students with the skills necessary to administer radiation for imaging various body systems.

Senior Year

Diagnostic Medical Sonography:  provides students with the skills necessary to operate sonographic equipment and control images through various enhancements.

All areas of study include both classroom instruction and experiences in a clinical setting in an area health care institution. This provides students with opportunities for direct patient care involving those who are sick and injured, as well as those for whom radiologic diagnosis or treatment is indicated.  For those choosing informatics or management, clinical internships provide opportunities for learning the necessary skills in those arenas.

All students, prior to formal admission, will be advised by the Departmental Advisor when planning their schedule.

    Expenses

In addition to tuition and immunization costs, Radiologic Technology students will incur the following expenses:

    1. All students in the College of Nursing and Health Professions must purchase malpractice insurance prior to rotating through clinical sites. The annual cost of this insurance is approximately $40.
    2. The cost of textbooks will vary each semester, with a majority of the total cost occurring in the first semester of the professional program. Textbook costs for the first semester may be as much as $500. These texts are used throughout the program.
    3. Uniform costs are approximately $200.
    4. CPR certification is required and may charge a nominal fee.
    5. Background checks are required for clinical students. This cost is between $75-$100. A drug screen is required for certain clinic sites, with a cost between $25-$45.
    6. Students are required to purchase access to online clinical software for use in clinical courses. This is a one-time fee of approximately $150.
    7. TB mask fittings are required. The fitting is available at A-State within the first few weeks of the fall semester. The cost is around $25.

    Criminal Background Checks

Arkansas State University College of Nursing and Health Professions requires background checks for students admitted to professional programs if the screening is required by an affiliate requirement. This is to ensure compliance with agreements between the College and Clinical Facilities.

    Verified Credentials

Arkansas State University College of Nursing and Health Professions requires background checks for students admitted to professional programs if the screening is required by an affiliate requirement. This is to ensure compliance with agreements between the College and Clinical Facilities.

    Background Check Results

Upon completion, the results of the background screening will be sent to you via email that will apprise you of the findings as well as your final score of:

    Red: Convictions or Discrepancy found
    Yellow: Possible Discrepancy found
Green: No Convictions or Discrepancies found

    Appealing Your Results

If any information is found that would negatively affect your eligibility for clinical placement in the Program, you will be given an opportunity to challenge the information through the Adverse Action process associated with Verified Credentials.

The clinical site will receive the information concerning any reports that are yellow or red and will determine your eligibility to participate in the clinical experience base on their criteria.

    Immunization & Health Records

Once accepted into the program students must provide documented evidence of vaccination for hepatitis-B.  Vaccination consists of three separate doses of the vaccine, given at time zero, 1 month, and 6 months.  Optimal protection is not conferred until after the third dose.  The student must start this series immediately after acceptance to the professional program.

Additionally, students are required to provide documentation of a physical examination once accepted into the professional program.

    Drug Testing

Some of the clinical sites used by the BSRS programs require drug testing prior to placement for assigned rotations. Information for obtaining the drug testing is provided by the program. Costs are to be borne by the student.

    Transportation

Students are required to provide their own transportation when assigned to all clinical rotations. When determining educational costs, consideration should be given to this additional expense.

    Student Employment

The BSRS degree requires an unusual amount of the student’s time, and students should pay particular attention to the section on “Student Academic Load” in the Academic Regulations section in this Bulletin. Outside employment may need to be adjusted to course and clinical requirements scheduling.
