2015 Spring Commencement Set for May 9

JONESBORO — More than 1,800 graduates are expected to receive degrees at Arkansas State University’s 2015 spring graduation, Saturday, May 9. The two ceremonies are in A-State’s Convocation Center, 217 Olympic Drive.

Of the 1,837 candidates, 37 are graduating cum laude, while 34 are magna cum laude. Five graduates are graduating with summa cum laude honors.

Five colleges, including the College of Education and Behavioral Science, College of Fine Arts, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Media and Communication, and University College, will convene at 10 a.m., while the 2:30 p.m. ceremony features the College of Agriculture and Technology, College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Nursing and Health Professions, and College of Sciences and Mathematics.

Morning Student Speaker: Japhanie Gray

Japhanie Gray of Osceola, who will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in multimedia journalism (radio-television), is the student speaker at the 10 a.m. ceremony. Gray is a Distinguished Service Award recipient for 2015 and a seven-time Chancellor's List member with a 4.0 grade point average. She is the station manager for ASU-TV and the program director for Red Wolf radio. She is also the recipient of a License2Howl to Howl scholarship as well as the Walter Cronkite Governor’s Emmy's Award.

Afternoon Student Speaker: Earl Morris

Earl Morris of Jacksonville, the 2015 R.E. Lee Wilson Award winner, will address the commencement class at 2:30 p.m. He is receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry with an emphasis in pre-pharmacy. Morris, who has a 3.85 cumulative grade point average, is a member of the Dean’s and Chancellor’s lists as well as the Honors College Director’s List. He is also an Honors College student and A-State Scholar, having received the scholarship since 2011.

Chris Masingill, the federal co-chairman of the Delta Regional Authority, is the featured speaker during both commencements. The Delta Regional Authority and Arkansas State joined forces in April to create a new eight-state Delta Research Consortium. 

Following the ceremonies, there will be a reception on the north mezzanine for graduates and their families.
