A-State Athletics’ Academic Performance Reaches New High
JONESBORO, Ark. (1/8/16) – Arkansas State Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir consistently communicates to the department’s student-athletes that “our accomplishments of today become our expectations of tomorrow,” and the Red Wolves’ latest academic performance reflects they have embraced that message.
A-State placed a school-record 211 student-athletes on the most recent Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, helping the Red Wolves achieve a new all-time high with a 3.070 all-department GPA for the 2015 fall semester. Arkansas State is in the midst of an unprecedented era in academic achievement with record-setting 2013, 2014 and 2015 fall semesters, which saw its student-athletes combine to post their best ever all-department GPA in three consecutive years.
“We’ll continue to express our desire to develop a strong academic culture our students help create through their commitment to excellence in the classroom,” said Mohajir. “When you have the kind of results we are seeing on a year-to-year basis, it demonstrates the great pride and dedication our administration, coaches and students take in academics. I couldn’t be more proud of the high standard our students are setting.”
Ten A-State teams ended last semester with at least a 3.1 GPA, and the Red Wolves’ department-wide 3.070 GPA topped the previous school record of 3.039 in fall of 2014. The athletics department posted at least a 3.0 for the fifth time in school history, and all five have come since 2012.
“The A-State community is very proud of the academic performance of the student-athletes that represent us,” said Arkansas State University Chancellor Dr. Tim Hudson. “The cooperation between academics and athletics has never been better, and we applaud everyone for prioritizing the overall welfare and progress of our students.”
The 211 AD’s Honor Roll members account for 61 percent of all-student athletes and includes every member of both the women’s golf and women’s tennis teams. The football team’s 58 players on the honor roll were the most among all programs, but at least seven student-athletes from each sport made the list.
A-State had 31 student-athletes compile a 4.0 GPA, and they were among the 70 Red Wolves that found their way onto the Chancellor’s List for holding at least a 3.8 GPA. The Dean’s List featured 47 student-athletes that achieved between a 3.6 and 3.79 GPA.
The Arkansas State Athletics Department will hold its annual A-State Awards at the conclusion of the spring semester to celebrate the academic and athletic accomplishments of its student-athletes.
