A-State Choirs to Perform in Concert Tuesday
JONESBORO – The Department of Music at Arkansas State University will present the University Singers and Community Choir in concert on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Fowler Center’s Riceland Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
The University Women’s Singers will begin with three movements from “Songs of Sanctuary” by Karl Jenkins, joined by members of the A-State strings and percussion programs. The women will also be premiering a piece by Aaron Fisher, “Heaven’s Gates,” and will feature baritone soloist, Matthew Carey. They will end their segment with the Appalachian song, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” featuring senior women soloists.
The University Men’s Singers will be next starting with a Z. Randall Stroope composition titled “Homage.” This will be followed by an arrangement of Schubert’s “Die Nachtigall,” accompanied by Dr. Timothy Crist on acoustic guitar.
The men will then sing a beautiful rendition of “Shenandoah” accompanied by solo cellist, Shelby Steward. In addition, the men will also be premiering another Aaron Fisher piece titled “A Father’s Love.” This piece will feature soprano soloist, Bethania Baray.
The group will end their portion of the concert with a Moses Hogan spiritual arrangement of “Plenty Good Room” directed by graduate assistant, Matthew Crociata, and accompanied by Aaron Fisher.
The Community Choir will be the final performance group and will begin with Wiliiametta Spencer’s “At the Round Earth’s Imagined Corners.” The will follow with “Juravit Dominus” by J. M. Haydn and arranged by Dale Miller. In addition they will perform “Lamb of God” by Christiansen, “Hold On” arranged by Simpson, and selections from Handel’s "Messiah." The selections will feature both instrumental and vocal soloists.
The University Singers are under the direction of Cherie Collins, adjunct instructor in music, and the Community Choir is under the direction of Dr. Dale Miller, director of choral activities. Brian Henkelmann is the collaborative pianist for all groups.
