A-State Choirs to Present Fall Concert in Preparation for Invited Performances in U.S. and Spain
JONESBORO – The Arkansas State University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their fall concert Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Fowler Center, Riceland Hall, 201 Olympic Dr.
Dr. Dale Miller, director of choral activities, will conduct both groups. Brian Henkelmann, temporary instructor of music, serves as the rehearsal pianist for both groups and will play piano and organ for the concert, which is free and open to the public.
The Chamber Singers will be performing “Star-Spangled Banner” by Lloyd Pfautsch, sung “in the round” with the Concert Choir, “Vezzosette Ninfe” by Giovanni Gastoldi, “Non vidi mai dopo notturna pioggia” by Luca Marenzio, “Ding Dong Merrily on High” arranged by Frederick H. Candlyn, “Prado verde y florido” by Francisco Guerrero, “Music’s Echo” by Thomas Moore, and “Cucù, cucù!” by Juan del Encina.
The Concert Choir will preview several selections by American and European composers that will be presented in two invited performances in February and March of 2014. The choir has been selected by the board of directors of the Arkansas Choral Directors Association to sing in February at the Arkansas All-State Music Conference in Hot Springs. The Concert Choir and University Singers also will participate in a series of invitational performances in the “Celebration of American Music” in Spain during spring break.
The Concert Choir will be performing “O vos omnes” by Pablo Casals, “Vere languores nostros” by Tomas Luis de Victoria, “Her Sacred Spirit Soars” by Eric Whitacre, “Beatus Vir Qui Timet Dominum” by Johann Michael Haydn, “I Surrender All” and “Cert’nly Lawd” both arranged by Moses Hogan and “Con el vito” by Manuel Massoti Littel.
Audience members will have opportunities before and after the concert to make tax deductible donations to help defray expenses of the choirs’ trip to Spain.
Dr. Miller stated “We are so fortunate to be invited to tour and perform in Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid, Spain, next March. This is a wonderful opportunity to fulfill the mission of Arkansas State University as we allow our students to enrich their education by seeing our European heritage in music, art, and architecture, as well as bringing our university, the state of Arkansas, and the United States to the people of Spain.
“Not all of our students are able to afford to participate in such a wonderful experience without the financial support of our patrons. Every contribution helps to provide this educational opportunity to our students.”
