A-State Counseling Center to Screen Film “Call Me Crazy”

09/25/2013

JONESBORO, Ark. — The Arkansas State University Counseling Center will host a screening of the film “Call Me Crazy” on Monday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m., in the Carl R. Reng Student Union Auditorium. Admission is free and is open to the public.

In April 2013, Lifetime Television premiered “Call Me Crazy: A Five Film” which brings together an all-star ensemble cast with five interwoven stories about how love, support and hope can help to overcome emotional health conditions like depression, bipolar disorder and post traumatic stress syndrome.

“We hope this film will promote better understanding of persons with mental disorders while providing information about appropriate treatments and resources,” said Dr. Philip Hestand, director of the Counseling Center. “The ASU Counseling Center collaborates with the Jed Foundation and its affiliates, Half of Us and ULifeline, to provide 24/7 supplemental mental health information and support for our students.”

Actress Brittany Snow, a co-founder of Love is Louder, stars in the film alongside Academy Award winners Jennifer Hudson, Melissa Leo, and Octavia Spencer, along with Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland and others. Jennifer Aniston, Marta Kauffman, Kristin Hahn, Kevin Chinoy and Francesca Silvestri are the film’s executive producers, and actresses Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Bonnie Hunt and Ashley Judd directed the film.

The Jed Foundation’s Love is Louder movement partnered with Lifetime and the film’s production team to help turn its messages of help and hope into action. Now, the foundation is expanding the reach and impact of the film by working with college campuses to hold screenings of the film.

Donna and Phil Satow founded the Jed Foundation in 2000 after they lost their son Jed to suicide. While trying to learn more about suicide and make sense of their unthinkable loss, the Satows discovered an urgent and unmet need for programming and resources that helped colleges, students and parents recognize and address emotional health issues and prevent suicide.

Through the guidance of respected experts in the fields of mental health and higher education, The Jed Foundation has become the leading nonprofit organization addressing issues related to mental health and suicide in the college population.

Love is Louder (www.loveislouder.com) is a movement started by The Jed Foundation and actress Brittany Snow in late 2010 to support anyone feeling hopeless, alone or mistreated. The movement works online, through the media and in communities to strengthen emotional health by building resiliency, creating connectedness, promoting acceptance and equipping advocates to support their peers.
