A-State Herald, Staffers Win Arkansas College Media Association Awards

JONESBORO — The Herald, Arkansas State University’s campus newspaper, along with several staff members won numerous awards recently at the Arkansas College Media Association (ACMA) conference and awards ceremony. The event was held at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
 
Five staffers and Herald adviser and assistant professor of the multimedia journalism program, Sandra Combs attended the annual event. The students include Editor-in-Chief Emily Alexander, News Editor Emma Williams, Photo Editor Chelsea Hays, #Life Editor Allison Nichols and Reporter Blake Rylant.
 
Awards for The Herald and staffers include:
·         Newspaper In-Depth News—Second place, “Updates Tighten Information Security,” Tanya Giraldo.
·         Newspaper General Column Writing—Honorable Mention, “Academic Attitudes Need Altering,” Micah Christensen.
·         Newspaper Newswriting—First place, “Faculty Admins Continue Budget Discussion,” Emma Williams.
·         Newspaper Editorial Cartoon—Second place, “Women’s NCAA,” Lance Smith.
·         Newspaper Election/Political Writing—Second place, “Former Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney Drops in…,” Allison Nichols.
·         Meetings/Speech Coverage Writing—First place, “Former U.S. President Visits Campus,” Allison Nichols.
·         Newspaper Election/Political Writing—First place, “Beebe Makes Kay House Donation…,” Emily Alexander.
·         Newspaper Feature Writing—First place, “Puppy-dog Tales,” Bethany Gallimore.
·         Newspaper Newswriting—Third place, “First-Time Performer Takes Miss ASU Title,” Bethany Gallimore.
·         Newspaper Sports Story Writing—Second place, “Red Wolves required to remove cross symbol from helmets,” Jorge Quiquivix and Bethany Gallimore.
·         Meetings/Speech Coverage Writing—Second place, “A-State Chancellor Gives Update to Faculty Senate,” Bethany Gallimore.
·         Website of the Year (Jorge Quiqquivix), First place, AstateHerald.com.
 
Prior to the awards announcement, the ACMA presented a special tribute titled, “In Loving Memory: A Tribute to Arkansas State University Media Adviser Bonnie Thrasher.” Thrasher, an instructor in the multimedia journalism program, died March 31. 
 
The tribute included a three-and-a-half minute slideshow/video. An easel held Thrasher’s faculty photo and the front section of The Herald. The A-State delegation was presented a plant to place in the newsroom in Thrasher’s memory.
