A-State Student Receives Sibylla and Kenneth Peters Scholarship
05/01/2015
JONESBORO — Matt Reynolds, a senior from Hot Springs Village, is the newest recipient of the Sibylla and Kenneth Peters Memorial Scholarship. The monetary award was presented to Reynolds by Cindy Hinson, the Peters’ Scholarship chair and coordinator of the Professional Education Programs Office.
The scholarship, valued at $1,000 per semester, was established in 1978 in memory of longtime educators Sibylla Barton Peters and her husband Kenneth Peters for their contributions and service on behalf of the Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society on the local, state and national levels. Three local chapters of this honor sorority established the endowment.
“It’s a great honor and privilege to receive this prestigious award,” said Reynolds. “I am so thankful for this generous gift from the AKD honor society which will go far in paying for my teaching internship in the upcoming fall semester.” Reynolds will graduate in December 2015 with a Bachelor of Social Science in Education degree.
Reynolds will also complete his internship during the fall 2015 semester and plans to enroll in graduate school at Arkansas State in the near future. He hopes to teach on the high school level and continue his education. His ultimate goal is to teach on the college and university levels.
Recipients are awarded the scholarship during their teaching internship semester. They must also have a 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate the abilities, personal qualities and scholarship needed to become an outstanding teacher.
Reynolds has competed in the Freshman Writing Competition at A-State and served as a volunteer manager and coach for the Red Wolf football and baseball programs. He also participates in the Homeless Christmas Caravan that helps to provide clothes for the homeless, and is active in the Arkansas State Dietetics Can Food Drive.
