12/08/2014

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Arkansas State football team will play Mid-American Conference member Toledo in the 2015 GoDaddy Bowl, it was announced Sunday after the Rockets accepted an invitation to the Jan. 4 bowl game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

The Red Wolves accepted an invitation last Wednesday, Dec. 3, to play in the GoDaddy Bowl for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year in the game’s 16-year history. Arkansas State dropped a 38-20 decision to Northern Illinois in the 2012 GoDaddy Bowl, but claimed a 17-13 victory over 25th-ranked Kent State in 2013 and a 23-20 win over Ball State in last year’s version of the contest.

The 2015 GoDaddy Bowl will mark the third all-time meeting between Arkansas State and Toledo, but the first since 1992. The Rockets hold a 2-0 lead in the series, capturing home victories in both 1990 and 1992. A-State has also announced a home-and-home series with Toledo over the 2015 and 2016 seasons. The series’ initial game will be played next year at Toledo’s Glass Bowl stadium, while the return game is set for 2016 in Jonesboro.

Toledo completed the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and as the Mid-American Conference’s West Division co-champions along with Northern Illinois as both team’s posted a 7-1 league mark. NIU won the tie-breaker and advanced to the MAC championship game by virtue of its 27-24 win over Toledo on Nov. 11.

The Rockets won their final two games of the regular season, including victories over MAC East Division champion Bowling Green on Nov. 19 and Eastern Michigan on Nov. 28. Toledo is bowl eligible for the fifth straight season and will be playing its 14th all-time bowl game.

Toledo holds a 9-4 bowl record and most recently played in the 2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The Rockets last competed in Mobile for a bowl game in 2005 when it was known as the GMAC Bowl. The Rockets defeated UTEP, 45-13.

A-State completed the regular season with a 7-5 overall record, marking its fourth consecutive year with a winning record for the first time since 1984-87 when it was an NCAA I-AA (now FCS member). The Red Wolves also posted a winning Sun Belt Conference record (5-3) for the fourth straight year and seventh time since the football league was formed in 2001.

Arkansas State has compiled 35 victories over the last four seasons to rank among the top 25 teams in the nation in total wins over that span. The Red Wolves have 10 seniors on their roster who will not only end their careers as part of the most successful class in A-State’s FBS history, but also having competed in a bowl game each of the last four years.
