10/19/2021

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University will participate in the annual Great Central U.S. ShakeOut earthquake preparedness drill on Thursday, Oct. 21.

The university will test its emergency alert system with messages to all campus members at noon emphasizing the key earthquake awareness phrase:  Drop, Cover and Hold On.

At noon, those who can participate should drop to the ground, cover themselves against potential falling objects and hold on during the duration of the ground shaking.

A-State is encouraging those who are sheltering and hanging on to take selfies and post them with the hashtag #AStateShakeOut.

As a part of the awareness campaign, the university’s Office of Emergency Management and the academic Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management are partnering with the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management to have a display at the Arkansas State Museum starting on Wednesday.

Jonesboro and A-State are located in the New Madrid earthquake zone, named for the most destructive earthquake in United States history which had its epicenter near New Madrid, Mo.
