Arkansas Science Festival 2017 Runs Thursday thru Saturday
JONESBORO – The fourth annual Arkansas Science Festival at Arkansas State University will culminate Saturday, Oct. 21, with its largest event -- Science Expo -- a celebration of science, technology, engineering and math.
The expo will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Student Activity Center, 2802 A St., just north of Centennial Bank Stadium.
The Science Expo is the Festival’s largest event, with local businesses, corporations, organizations, and clubs providing interactive, hands-on exhibits and activities to science lovers of all ages.
Students, families, passersby are all invited to celebrate at the Arkansas Science Festival. Admission is free.
"In addition to a variety of campus groups, we also welcome Arkansas Lego Users Group, Master Gardeners, Translational Research Institute at UAMS, ASU Mid-South, and Arkansas Geological Survey to the Science Expo," said Dr. Amy Pearce, professor of psychology and one of the festival organizers.
With more than 30 different science stations, the Science Expo will be lighted with stars inside the mobile planetarium, vibrating with sounds waves from live musicians, and energized by Howl, Scarlet, and the A-State science cheerleaders.
“The faculty, staff and students of the College of Sciences & Mathematics look forward each year to joining others from A-State and the region in promoting science through the Arkansas Science Festival," added Dr. Anne Grippo, interim dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics. "Our student clubs get energized to design fun, hands-on activities focused on their future careers or the lessons from their classrooms, while our faculty and staff are excited to bring their research passions to the community through this enjoyable event. We hope 'kids of all ages' will join us for the Science Expo and have fun with science.”
On Thursday, Oct. 19, "Mindfulness through Body Awareness" will be hosted by Dr. Irina Khramtsova, associate professor of counseling.
This workshop will teach participants how to relax and tame one's busy mind by keeping it in the “here and now” through connecting to body. The mindfulness workshop is in the Reng Student Union, Pine Tree Room, at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is free, but pre-registration is recommended by contacting Khramtsova, ikhramtsova@AState.edu, in advance.
On Friday, Oct. 20, Arkansas resident Kevin Delaney, who is known for his love of science and his ability to make it fun for all, will present his brand of "awesome science" during two presentations at Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Dr., at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Details and ticket prices (if available) are in a news release.
Also on Friday, ASU Museum will host "Crazy Science," a series of hands-on activities that will emphasize the fun side of science and encourage participants to learn more. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 pm., and admission is free. Details are in a news release.
