Arkansas Science Festival Events to Run Oct. 17-24
JONESBORO – Arkansas Science Festival gets underway for its seventh year Saturday, Oct. 17, with an online presentation of Science Riot, an online science comedy show for adults, starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Arkansas State University Museum will host a number of educational space science activities, "Blast into STEM," from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 20-24. The STEM acronym refers to the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The museum activities are free.
On Friday, Oct. 23, the festival program "Take Me to the Moon" includes telescopically guided tour of the moon, followed by a showing of the award-winning movie "Apollo 11" at the Stone Drive-In Theatre at Mountain View. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own binoculars. The suggested donation is $5.
The Science Festival also will sponsor a "Virtual Science Expo" Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The free expo will include live and pre-recorded hands-on STEM activities viewers can do at home. The festival website has the schedule, registration for live zoom events, and the chance to pick up a free Arkansas Science Festival bag with materials for the activities, but there is a limited supply.
"We are excited about the opportunity to reach a wider audience than ever before. Having a virtual expo allows anyone to attend and people can take their time and really get into the activities, instead of rushing about fighting the crowds at an in-person event," stated Dr. Karen Yanowitz, one of the festival organizers. "We hope that our attendees will celebrate science at home and may be motivated to continue finding science all around them even after the festival is over."
Arkansas State University is a presenting sponsor of the 2020 Arkansas Science Festival.
“At Arkansas State, we know the value of encouraging young minds to become engaged in science, and I’m looking forward to increasing our commitment to the Arkansas Science Festival,” stated Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Alan Utter said when the sponsorship was announced. "We want to do our part to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals. It begins with supporting the Arkansas Science Festival in its outreach projects.”
