Arkansas State Museum celebrates Black History Month

01/22/2013

JONESBORO, Ark. — As part of the Arkansas State University Museum’s cultural diversity series, the public is invited to the Black History Month celebration Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 5-7 p.m. ASU Museum is located in the west wing of the Dean B. Ellis Library, 320 University Loop Circle.  The event is free of charge.

The evening will begin in the auditorium (Room 182) with a presentation entitled, “Art as Resistance: The History and Significance of African American Quilts,” by Dr. Cherisse Jones-Branch, associate professor in the ASU History Department.  Visitors may also enjoy refreshments in the Atrium Gallery while viewing an intriguing replica of an Underground Railroad quilt.

In the museum’s main gallery, the whole family can step back in time by assuming the roles of runaway slaves seeking freedom through the Underground Railroad and imagine what it was like to stay one step ahead of slave catchers.  Then, create a quilt block in the museum’s newest traveling exhibit, Design Zone.

Arkansas State University Museum is open Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sundays from 1-5 p.m.  The museum is closed Mondays and university holidays.
