Arkansas State’s College of Communications to host 75th Annual Communications Day March 2
JONESBORO, Ark. — Arkansas State University and the College of Communications will host the 75th annual Communications Day, formerly Journalism and Broadcasting Day, contests on Saturday, March 2, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
Contests will be held in the College of Communications building at 330 University Loop West.
The name change to Communications Day reflects the changing nature of journalism and broadcasting professions, said Dean of the College of Communications Dr. Brad Rawlins.
"We have had 75 fabulous years with Journalism/Broadcast Day,” said Rawlins. “Students from all around the state participate and it is a great legacy for Arkansas State University. It started with print journalism, grew to include radio and television, and now includes Internet, multimedia, advertising, public relations, social media, debate and public speaking.
“We realized that the competition ought to have a name that is more inclusive of all we do, so moving forward, we will call it Communications Day."
Journalism and Broadcasting Day/Communications Day will feature more than 20 individual contests with awards for first, second, third place winners and honorable mentions. The school accumulating the highest amount of points for the day will receive the sweepstakes plaque.
The individual contests include news writing, sports writing, photography, editorial writing, TV anchoring, extemporaneous speaking, impromptu debates, radio announcing, video promotion, headline writing, public relations planning, editorial cartooning, feature writing, newspaper copy reading, advertising copy and layout, broadcast news writing, TV commercial or PSA (Public Service Announcement), music video, documentary short, web blog, sports programming, TV news report and TV sports report.
Schools also participate in the newspaper contest by submitting issues of their school paper from the 2012-2013 school year.
