ASU Military Science Department to have Grand Opening for new Hall of Heroes
JONESBORO -- The Hall of Heroes at the Department of Military Science has moved to a new home.
Located for years along the walls of the east entrance, the Hall of Heroes was begun in 1994 in order to recognize the extraordinary career achievements of Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) alumni since the program's beginning in 1936.
The Hall of Heroes has been established in new space made available in the Military Science Building after the Arkansas National Guard moved out to new quarters elsewhere in Jonesboro.
Under the leadership of Lt. Col. Cecil L. Clark, professor of military science, the department decided to use the opportunity to provide permanent recognition for achievements by the Red Wolf Battalion and its cadets.
“The Department of Military Science is proud to announce the Grand Opening of the new Hall of Heroes,” according to Lt. Col. Clark.
The Hall of Heroes recognizes not only its honored alumni of the ROTC program, but also current student and Red Wolf Battalion personnel.
According to the Department of Military Science, Arkansas State pays tribute to ROTC alumni who have distinguished themselves through heroic service, government service, and outstanding representation of the university by placing them in the Hall of Heroes.
Currently the Hall honors 65 inductees who are outstanding alumni of the ROTC program.
The ceremonial formal opening of the new Hall of Heroes will be Friday, Dec. 14.
A special part of the day’s festivities will be the commissioning of two new Army second lieutenants. The commissioning will begin at 3 p.m. at the Hall of Heroes.
Christopher Van Leuvan of Hagarville (Johnson County), and Katryna J. Cardwell of Marion, a Harding University student, will be pinned with their second lieutenant bars.
Following their commissioning, Van Leuvan will be assigned to field artillery in the U. S. Army and Cardwell will be assigned to medical services in the Arkansas National Guard.
Immediately after the commissioning ceremony, the ASU ROTC Red Wolf Battalion will host an open house to showcase the new Hall of Heroes.
Everyone is invited to tour the new facility, which displays the Military Science Department’s honors and awards and an impressive display of plaques that have been hung in honor of each individual who has been inducted into the Hall of Heroes.
The Open House is scheduled to continue until 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
