03/13/2017

JONESBORO — Author Tammy Moore Harrison will hold a book signing and discussion to commemorate the history of women in sports from the past and onward into the future. The event is being held as part of Women’s History Month celebration at Arkansas State University.

Harrison who earned her Bachelor of Science in Education degree at Arkansas State, will review her first book, Breaking the Press: The Incredible Story of the All-American Red Heads, Monday, March 27, from 5:30-7 p.m., in the Spring River Room in the Carl R. Reng Student Union, 101 N. Caraway Road.

A longtime educator and coach, Harrison tells the story of the All-American Red Heads women’s professional basketball team. The Red Heads were formed in 1936, 40 years before Title IX was passed. Several members of the Red Heads will be present.

Additionally, Sonja Tate, an All-American basketball player while at Arkansas State and a member of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, will be a guest speaker. Tate is currently the head coach at ASU Mid-South in West Memphis.

“Please join us to hear more about these women and their dedication to the game of basketball and the history of sports,” said Sherry Eskridge, outreach librarian at Arkansas State.

The Dean B. Ellis Library is hosting the event and the Office of Diversity at A-State is sponsoring the book signing and discussion. It is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and refreshments will be provided.

For more information, contact Eskridge at seskridge@AState.edu or by phone at (870) 972-3577.
