JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s Dean B. Ellis Library will host a book talk and signing by the author of “The Journey of the All American Red Heads,” as well as the 86th reunion of the famous basketball team.
Tammy Harrison will discuss her new book, which tells the story of how women’s basketball evolved from hair salons to a nationally touring team that proved basketball was not just a man’s sport.
The presentation and reunion are set for 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in the Reng Student Union Auditorium and Mockingbird Room, 101 N. Caraway Rd., according to Sherry Eskridge, student engagement and outreach librarian. Admission is free and open to the public, she added.
Harrison will discuss the lives of her parents and team founders, Orwell and Lorene Moore, as well as the incredible female athletes who entertained and inspired fans across the nation with their skills and passion for the sport.
Guest speaker Destinee Rogers, head women’s basketball coach at A-State, will discuss women and sports, especially basketball.
Every Red Head has a story about the impact the organization and the experience had on the trajectory of her life. Known for their incredible basketball skills and red hair, the All American Red Heads would later be honored at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.
Through her book, Harrison shares the stories of these incredible women. A film crew will be on site, working on a documentary about the All American Red Heads. Books will be available for purchase; Harrison may be contacted for more information at tmh42@cox.net.
Free parking will be available in the North Parking Deck. For more details, one may contact Eskridge at libraryevents@AState.edu or (870) 972-3077.
