College of Business Students to Host Fourth International “Doing Business” Exhibition
JONESBORO — Students from the College of Business at Arkansas State University will have a chance to present an international “Doing Business” exhibition for the fourth straight time, Thursday, March 10, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in Centennial Hall at the Carl R. Reng Student Union, 101 N. Caraway, Jonesboro. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibition is a student poster presentation about countries and regions of the world. In addition to culture and other facts about a country or region, the main focus is the competitive advantage of the country or area, or why they are important both now and in the future. New to this event are several student teams exhibiting small family businesses now operating globally.
“At a single location, all who attend will be able to experience and learn more about other countries and cultures that are different from their own,” stated Dr. Sarath Nonis, professor of marketing. They will be able to meet, talk and ask questions from students from other parts of the world. There will be trivia, food to taste from several countries and entertainment.
Nonis also stated there will be short, live performances from students from Nepal, India, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Nigeria, Japan and Vietnam showcasing their home countries’ cultures.
“It is our hope a person who visits will come to the realization that what makes us different also makes us unique,” continued Nonis. “If we put those differences aside when we work together for a common cause, we all benefit and the results make the world a better place. The exhibition is a place where a person’s “global mind set” can be developed and expanded. A global mindset is essential in the interconnected world we now share.”
Lori Smith, vice president of human resources for St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro, is the featured speaker for the event. She will offer tips to students on how to network to secure career opportunities and how to overcome the challenges international students face when trying to gain work experience in the United States.
Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resources from Arkansas State in 1998. She also holds a Masters in Business Administration from William Woods University and is certified as a senior professional in human resources.
She has 20 years of experience in human resources in multiple industries—manufacturing, telecommunications and now healthcare. She landed her first professional human resources role while working as an intern at A-State, and has worked with many students through the years assisting them with internships and starting their own careers.
