College of Humanities and Social Sciences to sponsor ‘Pitches and Poems’ Writing Contest
JONESBORO–– The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Arkansas State University is sponsoring a writing contest called “Pitches and Poems.”
“Its goal is to promote creative writing about baseball and/or softball,” according to Dr. Robert Lamm, associate professor of English. “The contest is part of a collaboration between CHSS and Red Wolves Athletics to promote and celebrate the connections between baseball/softball and literature.
The three categories are: short fiction with a maximum of 1000 words; essay with a maximum of 700 words; and poetry. The topic should be baseball or softball related, but it does not have to be about the A-State Red Wolves.
The contest has two levels. One is for high school, grades 9-12, and the other is for A-State students, any major.
Entries must be submitted as an email attachment in Word. At the top of the page, entrants must provide name, email address, mailing address, phone number, grade, and school (A-State or high school). Teachers should pre-select their best entries before submitting. Writers should email their entries to Dr. Lamm, rlamm@astate.edu, by April 1.
Awards will be given to first, second and third place winners who will be named for each category and level. First-place winners for each category and level will be honored at a banquet on the A-State campus. Winners will be notified by April 8, and awards will be presented on April 15.
