Delta Flix Film and Media Festival Invites Entries

10/09/2014

JONESBORO – Entries are invited for the first Delta Flix Film and Media Festival, scheduled for April 7-11, 2015, at Arkansas State University.

Filmmakers, photographers, and multimedia content specialists are encouraged to submit their creative work for screening during the festival, which is sponsored by the College of Media and Communication.

Festival organizers are especially interested in work relevant to the history and culture of Arkansas, the Mississippi Delta and the South, according to Dr. Michael Bowman, media festival director and assistant professor of media at A-State, but all topics are welcome.

"There are so many talented filmmakers, photographers, and media artists that live in this area.  Previously, these individuals had to travel outside the region to participate in festivals," he said.  "The College of Media and Communication wants to provide each of these artists with a venue to showcase their creativity."

Individuals who have direct connections to Arkansas and the Delta are especially encouraged to enter their work for the festival.

The entry deadline is Jan. 31, 2015.  Each entry should consist of presenter’s name and affiliation, address, telephone, email, technical needs for the presentation, a DVD or website link to the film or multimedia presentation, and a 100-200 word abstract.

"The Delta Flix Film and Media Festival recognizes stories can be told in different ways," Bowman continued.  "We want to celebrate imaginative and creative storytelling abilities of today’s media makers."

The festival will run in conjunction with the 21st Delta Symposium, sponsored by the Department of English and Philosophy.  The annual symposium features research in the humanities and social sciences.  Under this year's theme, "The South Goes to the Movies,” presenters will explore how America’s South is represented in film and video.

"Partnering with the Delta Symposium provides those attending the Delta Flix Film and Media Festival with an opportunity to explore media in a new way," he explained.  "In addition to seeing great films, photographs, and multimedia presentations at the Delta Flix Film and Media Festival, audiences can attend presentations from scholars about the relationship between motion pictures and the Southern way of life."

Bowman, a successful filmmaker himself and Ph.D. graduate in heritage studies, has long-term goals in mind for Delta Flix.

"My dream is that this festival will provide opportunities for filmmakers, photographers, and multimedia artists to share their creative visions with a wider audience.  Additionally, the festival creates an opportunity for participants to gather, network, and exchange ideas."

The call for entries for the Delta Flix Film and Media Festival is available through a link on the College of Media and Communication website, AState.edu/college/communications/.  Those interested in submitting entries may contact Bowman, mbowman@astate.edu, for more details.
