Delta Health Disparities Conference to Convene Nov. 9
JONESBORO –Arkansas State University’s Department of Social Work is hosting its sixth annual Delta Health Disparities Conference, Friday, Nov. 9, in the Carl R. Reng Student Union. This year's theme is “Narrowing the Gap Between Health Disparities in the Rural Delta from a Bio-Psycho, Social/Spiritual Perspective.”
The conference is co-chaired by associate professor Dr. Patricia Guy-Walls and assistant professor Dr. Tamara Glover.
The conference will run from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Registration fee is $95 for professionals and $35 for students. Participants can earn continuing education contact hours. Certificates will be available at the end of the conference.
Brookshield Laurent, D.O., vice-chair for the department of clinical medicine for the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine at A-State, is the keynote speaker.
The conference will offer free health screenings, including flu shots available from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and HIV/AIDs screening to conference attendees and community members, and will receive health education material throughout the conference.
The conference serves as an opportunity to bridge the gap in the Delta Region by increasing awareness of the many health disparities that continue to plague the community and surrounding regions.
The conference also functions as a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and community partnerships in the Delta. All workshops and presentations will incorporate best practice information and engage groups in interaction and discussion. The conference forum will also include a students poster presentation.
Discussion may include activism and advocacy, women, diabetes, rural outreach, support for caregivers, ethics, religion and spirituality, violence, stigma and discrimination as it relates to service delivery, obesity, wellness and human rights.
