Department of Music to present Wind Ensemble Concert, Nov. 15
JONESBORO -- The Arkansas State University Wind Ensemble will present its second concert of the 2012-13 season on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Riceland Hall of Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Dr.
The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Timothy Oliver, director of bands and coordinator of wind and percussion studies within the Department of Music. Dr. Oliver will lead the musicians of the ASU Wind Ensemble in a concert titled “Shadows and Lights” featuring works from composers Edward Gregson, Chang Su Koh, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Joel Puckett, Percy Grainger and Frank Ticheli.
The concert also will feature guest conductor Dr. Kevin Sedatole and flute soloist Olivia Boatman. Admission is free.
The concert program will include “Festivo” by Edward Gregson, “Lament” by Chang Su Koh, “Toccata Marziale” by Ralph Vaughn Williams, “The Shadow of Sirius” by Joel Puckett, “Country Gardens” by Percy Grainger, and “Symphony No. 2” by Frank Ticheli.
Dr. Sedatole serves as director of bands, professor of music, and chair of the conducting area at the Michigan State University College of Music. Prior to joining MSU, he was director of bands and associate professor of conducting at Baylor University. Earlier in his career he served as associate director of bands at the University of Texas and director of the Longhorn Band, and as associate director of bands at the University of Michigan and Stephen F. Austin State University.
He holds both the doctor of musical arts degree and master of music degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his bachelor of music degree from Baylor University. His experience as a conductor includes performances for the College Band Directors National Association, American Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, as well as performances in Carnegie Hall.
Sedatole is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the American Bandmasters Association, the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association. He holds honorary memberships in the Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma National Band Fraternities, as well as the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Musicians Fraternity.
Olivia Boatman is currently working on a master of music in flute performance at Arkansas State as a student of Joe Bonner, assistant professor of music. At ASU, she is the principal flutist of the ASU Wind Ensemble and a graduate assistant for the Department of Music and the A-State Bands. She is a graduate of Mississippi State University where she received a bachelor of music education. At MSU, Boatman was a member of the Flute Choir, Woodwind Quintet, Famous Maroon Band Drumline, piccoloist for the Starkville/MSU Symphony Orchestra, and principal flutist in the Wind Ensemble. She also served as an ambassador for the College of Education and secretary of the MSU chapter of MENC.
Boatman received first place in the freshman/sophomore and concerto competitions at the Mississippi Music Teachers Association, and also serves as the second flutist for the Starkville/MSU Symphony Orchestra. In addition to Bonner, her instructors include Sophie Kershaw, Carol Dale, and Lana Johns and she has attended master classes with Amy Porter, Ian Clarke, Patricia George, Christina Smith, and Jim Walker.
