Educators Will Discuss Implementation of New Assessment Partnership: PARCC
JONESBORO – Professional educators working with kindergarten through 12th grade students will gather at Arkansas State University Thursday, Jan. 23, to get updates on the implementation of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), which begins next academic year.
The new PARCC system in K-12 is expected to improve college and career readiness by more closely monitoring a student’s progress throughout his or her educational experience.
The event is a collaboration of the College of Education and Behavioral Science, the Crowley’s Ridge, Great Rivers, and Northeast Arkansas Educational Service Cooperatives, and the Education Renewal Zone (ERZ) at A-State.
“The purpose of this conference is to communicate updates and relevant information regarding PARCC to public school personnel ‘teams,’ " according to Dr. Rick Hux, director of ERZ. A team typically will include an administrator, a curriculum or assessment coordinator, and a classroom teacher.
School teams of teachers, principals, and testing administrators are expected to attend the full day of presentations at Centennial Hall of the Carl R. Reng Student Union.
After the welcome by Dr. Thilla Sivakumaran of the College of Education and Behavioral Science, the morning general session will be led by Melody Morgan and Sheree Baird of the Arkansas Department of Education.
The conference participants will attend a series of breakout sessions during the day on specific topics such as math, science, social studies and English language arts.
Those making presentations and their respective school districts are Matt McClure of Cross County; Ali Weimer of Marion; Tracy Valentine of West Memphis; Becky Justus of Greene County Tech; Karen Ladd of Nettleton; and Rebecca Perrin of Valley View.
Other speakers will be Jimmy Blevins and Jennifer Brown of Arkansas Department of Education; and Dixie Keyes and Mike Hall of Arkansas State University.
