Fall Commencement Set for Dec. 10
JONESBORO — A record 1,405 students will receive diplomas at Arkansas State University’s fall commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 10, at 10 a.m. in the Convocation Center, 201 Olympic Drive. The number of graduates surpasses the previous mark of 1,350 in the 2012 December graduation.
Dr. Lynita Cooksey, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research will confer degrees on the group that includes 717 undergraduates and 688 graduate students representing six colleges: Agriculture, Engineering and Technology; Business; Education and Behavioral Science; Liberal Arts and Communication; Nursing and Health Professions; and Sciences and Mathematics.
The class includes 58 students receiving honors who met the criteria: 35 cum laude (3.60-3.79 grade point average overall and institutional), 22 magna cum laude (3.80-3.99 GPA) and one summa cum laude (4.00 GPA).
Cody Hutchison of Jonesboro will provide remarks on behalf of the graduating class. Hutchison has earned a degree with a double major in music and instrumental music. In addition, he is graduating magna cum laude as a member of the A-State Honors Program.
Dr. KwangKook (David) Jeong, associate professor of mechanical engineering, will speak on behalf of the A-State faculty. Dr. Jeong is the recipient of the Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship. Jeong, who co-authored two peer-reviewed journal articles this year, was cited for including undergraduate engineering students in his research. He received a total of $1.22 million in new research funding this year, all as principal investigator. A faculty member since 2010, he completed his doctoral degree at Lehigh.
Also, the Department of Military Science and the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at Arkansas State will be recognized in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the program’s beginning at the university in 1936 and the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Army Cadet Command.
Following the commencement ceremony, there is a reception for all graduates and families at the north mezzanine.
