First-Year Convocation and Community Fair Highlight Arkansas State's Welcome Week
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University students will move into their residence halls Saturday and begin the annual Welcome Week activities that herald the beginning of another academic year.
The halls will officially open for incoming students at 9 Saturday morning. Members of the A-State Alumni Association will conduct its annual "Watering Hole" and numerous volunteers will assist the campus residents. Afterward, all students and their families are invited to attend Arkansas State's Football Fan Appreciation Day.
A major highlight of the week will be the Community and Organization Fair on campus, Wednesday, Aug. 20.
"The Community and Organization Fair is the perfect opportunity for our current and incoming students to see exactly what resources the city of Jonesboro has to offer. I personally think that it is vital that every student takes advantage and networks around to the various tables that local businesses set up," commented Brandon Haley, president of the Student Activities Board and a 2014 Pack Leader. "You have to remember that your college experience isn’t confined to the Arkansas State University campus, but the entire area of Jonesboro."
Eric Dittelman, Mind Reader
Comedic mind reader Eric Dittelman will entertain students Tuesday evening starting at 6 in the Reng Student Union auditorium. The first 40 students who arrive will receive a free shirt; all students will receive free popcorn and a Tropical Smoothie, and they will be eligible for free door prizes.
Community and Organization Fair
The annual A-State Community and Organization Fair will be the last major event of Welcome Week on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. More than 130 campus organizations, churches, business enterprises and other Jonesboro entities have reserved spaces so they can share information and give away food and prizes. The fair will be on the Heritage Plaza lawn in the center of campus.
Honors College Welcome Week
The Honors College will host several activities during the week, including a movie on the lawn Monday night at 8, tropical twister on Thursday at 6, and grilling on the grass Friday night at 6, all at the Honors Living-Learning Community courtyard. Open house will be held Monday, 3-6, at the HLLC smart classroom.
Upcoming 'Order of the Pack'
Haley also encouraged students to mark their calendar for "Order of the Pack," an Arkansas State tradition, to be held starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Centennial Bank Stadium. The spirit event is sponsored by the Student Activities Board and the Student Government Association, and will feature music by the Sound of the Natural State Band.
