Fowler Center Presents Claddagh: An Explosion of Celtic Dance and Music
JONESBORO – The next act featured in the Riceland Distinguished Performance Series at Arkansas State University’s Fowler Center is “Claddagh: An Explosion of Celtic Dance and Music.”
The performance will be Tuesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Riceland Hall, 201 Olympic Dr. The sponsor for the show is Occasions Publishing Group.
The term Claddagh (pronounced “Clah-dah”) comes from a traditional Irish ring that, when given, represents love, loyalty and friendship.
“ ‘Claddagh: An Explosion of Celtic Dance and Music’ will combine music, dance and multi-media projections for an energetic show similar to shows like Barrage and Stomp,” according to Dr. Wendy Hymes, director of Fowler Center.
The show will feature special musical guests, The Prodigals, one of the most successful bands to emerge from the East-Coast Irish scene. While the band members grew up largely in Ireland their original songs present a fusion of classic and contemporary Celtic musical traditions.
Dubbed “vibrant Irish rock” by the Chicago Sun Times and, “ . . . one of the premier Celtic rock bands leading into the 21st century” by the All Music Guide, the Prodigals are well-known, having headlined major venues and festivals throughout the United States, Los Angeles and Las Vegas to Chicago, Boston and Maine, as well as abroad in Canada, Germany and Ireland.
The members of the Prodigals are Gregory Grene (button accordion, vocals), David Fahy (guitar, vocals), Alex Grene (fiddle), Trifon Dimitrov (bass) and Brendan Smith (drums, percussion).
Add to this the beauty, power and grace of award-winning Irish dancers, including Mary Kate Sheehan, a champion Irish dancer who was appeared on the show, “So You Think You Can Dance,” Declan Crowley, a lead dancer with Michael Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance” tour, and tap dancer A.C. Lincoln.
All seating is reserved. Individual tickets for the Riceland Distinguished Performance Series are $30 and $20 for adults, and $23 and $15 for senior citizens and students, $24 and $16 for ASU faculty and staff, and $10 and $6 for ASU students with a current ID. Group discounts are available for groups of 15 or more.
