History Professor Dennis Rousey Dies Suddenly
JONESBORO – The university community today mourns the sudden death of Dr. Dennis C. Rousey.
Dr. Rousey, professor of history, came to Arkansas State University in 1978. During his 38 years in the classroom at A-State, he specialized in teaching U.S. history.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Mississippi, and his Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees at Cornell University.
His book, “Policing the Southern City: New Orleans, 1805-1889,” was published by the Louisiana State University Press in 1996. He also wrote numerous articles published in scholarly journals on his research interests, especially urban life and law enforcement in the 19th century South.
Rousey's professional memberships included the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Southern Historical Association and the Arkansas Association of College History Teachers.
He was a member of numerous committees in the Department of History, which he also served as acting chair in the spring of 1990. He also was an adviser to Phi Alpha Theta honor society in history.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo, and a son, Matthew. Arrangements have been announced by Emerson Funeral Home.
