Junior AuxiliaryJONESBORO — Representatives of the Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro presented a check for $31,100.62 to Arkansas State University, Wednesday, April 4, at Cooper Alumni Center on the ASU campus. The special donation was made on National Junior Auxiliary Day and part of the Junior Auxiliary Week Celebration, April 1-7. The money will add to the organization’s principal scholarship endowment.

“The efforts of the women of Junior Auxiliary are creating scholarships and enabling many young men and women in Craighead County to have an opportunity to gain access to a quality education all of the associated benefits during and after graduation,” said ASU interim chancellor Dr. Dan Howard.

“We wanted to find a way to strengthen our bond with ASU,” said Junior Auxiliary president Tad Margolis. “We met with Christy Low (Director of Development at ASU) and it was suggested that we donate to the scholarship fund. We thought it as a great idea.”

The original scholarship gift of $58,000 was designated in July 2008 to establish the Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro, Arkansas Scholarship Endowment Fund. Candidates for the scholarships made available by the endowment must be residents of Craighead County, a senior in good standing at a Craighead County high school, and meet additional eligibility criteria as determined by the selection committee. The committee consists of a JA scholarship selection group.

“I want to congratulate the Junior Auxiliary on their commitment and mission to help with education,” said Ron Rhodes, chairman of the ASU Board of Trustees. “I can’t say enough about how proud we are. On behalf of the board, I want to give thanks to Junior Auxiliary. It’s a great day for Junior Auxiliary and Arkansas State University.”

Junior Auxiliary has been awarding scholarships at ASU since 1958 when a Memorial Scholarship Fund was created. More than $450,000 in scholarships has been awarded to over the years.

The ASU endowment was created by Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro to ensure funds will be available to help worthy students to attend ASU.

Jonesboro’s Junior Auxiliary organization is a non-profit women’s volunteer service organization founded in 1950. The auxiliary’s design is to meet the needs of children, youth, and families in Craighead County. The 85 active members work with 11 service projects and closely with schools and other organizations to identify children with needs in health, welfare, civic, cultural, and educational fields. They are joined by 300 Life and Associate members.
