Karyn Floyd is First Recipient of Charles T. Crow Leadership Scholarship
JONESBORO — The first recipient of the Charles T. Crow Leadership Scholarship is Chancellor’s Leadership Class (CLC) student Karyn Floyd, a freshman from Cotton Plant.
The University Scholarship Committee, in coordination with the CLC selection committee, selected Floyd from among the qualified students who applied for the new scholarship, which was announced last month.
A graduate of Augusta High School, Floyd is majoring in biological sciences, pre-professional emphasis.
“This scholarship will help me achieve my academic goals which will help me achieve my career goals. Each step leads to another,” Floyd said. “This scholarship will help me pay for college, giving me one less thing to worry about, ultimately giving me more focus towards my studies.”
Floyd’s career goal is to become a pharmacist or doctor of osteopathic medicine.
“I have always had a passion for helping people,” she said, adding she hopes eventually to carry out her interests by starting a nonprofit organization.
In addition to being selected for the Chancellor’s Leadership Class, Floyd participates in the A-State Inspire Program and is a member of the Sister 2 Sister organization and the campus chapter of NAACP.
Her parents are Gaualofa Floyd and Edward Floyd, and she was raised by her grandmother, Ella Floyd.
The family of the late Charles T. Crow established the scholarship program as a tribute to his achievements and dedication to leadership development. Crow, a 1962 graduate of A-State, won the Wilson Award, A-State’s highest honor awarded to a graduating senior. His career was highlighted by service as an Army officer, and key roles in state government, nonprofits and business enterprises.
