Katherine Franzen Scholarship Awarded to Stuttgart Student
JONESBORO – Kimberly Oliver of Stuttgart, an animal science major at Arkansas State University, is the 2018 recipient of the Katherine E. Franzen Memorial Scholarship. The Franzen family selects the award winner each spring semester.
Oliver’s major has an emphasis in production management and she is minoring in agricultural business. The sophomore currently has a 4.0 grade point average and has been on the Chancellor’s List each semester since enrolling at A-State.
She is a member of the A-State Animal Science Club, National Society of Leadership and Success and Delta Tau Alpha. She has worked as a volunteer at the Bill & Alice Nix Petting Zoo and is a member of the A-State Equine Club.
Upon completion of her bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue a career in livestock production, particularly in the study of livestock nutrition.
Prior to attending Arkansas State, Oliver graduated third in her class with a 4.0 GPA from Stuttgart High School where she had internships at the Harry K. Dupree Stuttgart National Aquaculture Research Center in the toxicology lab and with the safety coordinator. She also volunteered with the Stuttgart Animal Shelter.
Scholarship recipients must be from Arkansas County and a full-time student at Arkansas State majoring in an agriculture-related field. The scholarship was founded to help students advance their education in the agricultural field. Recipients must maintain a minimum 2.25 grade point average and must exhibit leadership qualities.
The Katherine Franzen Memorial Scholarship is privately funded, established in 1992 by her grandson, Tom W. Franzen, to honor his grandmother who lived in Stuttgart. She was an astute farmer and businesswoman whose generosity was far-reaching.
Katherine E. Franzen (1914-2001) was a lifelong resident who contributed to a number of causes in the Stuttgart area. She was especially known for presenting anonymous gifts and sought no personal recognition.
