Kays Foundation Awards Three New Grants for A-State Faculty Research

JONESBORO – Three Arkansas State University faculty members have received of Kays Foundation grants to provide support for their projects during the 2022-23 academic year. The board of directors of the Kays Foundation reviews and selects grant proposals from A-State faculty and staff.
The Kays board approved a proposal from Dr. Christine Wright, associate professor of occupational therapy and department chair. Wright’s area will receive $50,000 toward acquisition of an Anatomage Table Convertible, with remaining project costs covered by College of Nursing and Health Professions funds. The table will help improve long-term learning of how anatomy, physiology and neuroanatomy principles apply to occupational and human performance.
Dr. Scott Bruce, associate professor of athletic training, received a grant of $26,495 for his research, “Effects of Concussion on Pupillary Metrics in the Acute and Chronic Stages.” Using REACT Neuro virtual reality units for measuring pupillary responses, he will analyze data from ROTC cadets to determine if a concussion has occurred, and from military veterans, whose head injuries have been associated with depression and anxiety.
Andressa Alves Augusto, research associate in the Ecotoxicology Research Facility, wrote a successful proposal for a $11,862 grant to modernize the facility’s fish culturing infrastructure. The grant will support a plumbing upgrade and renovations to the equipment used for culturing. The project will be evaluated by comparing fish health, using data collected before upgrade and post-upgrade, along with time spent culturing.
Terry Carty, executive vice president of the Kays Foundation, noted the grants are part of the foundation's ongoing commitment to assist the university by providing grants that help advance its academic, service and research missions.
The Arkansas State College Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education, which operates as Kays Foundation, traces its beginnings to 1911 and the administration of V.C. Kays, the founding principal and president of the institution that evolved into Arkansas State University.
