09/19/2012

JONESBORO – Vladimir Gorbach, classical guitarist, will present the second event in the 2012-13 Lecture-Concert Series at Arkansas State University, announced Dr. Tim Crist, chair of the Lecture-Concert Committee.

The concert will be Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, 2412 Quapaw Way.

The concert is presented with generous funding support from the College of Fine Arts, the Department of Music, the Guitar Guild, and the Student Government Association.

The remarkably gifted and internationally acclaimed guitarist has captivated audiences across Europe, Australia, the United States and his native Russia, both as a soloist and with orchestra.

Gorbach has won 10 first place prizes in international competitions including the 2011 Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) International Competition.  His GFA Winners Tour has included performances in America, Canada, Mexico, South America and China, and a Carnegie Hall debut through the D’Addario Foundation in February of 2013.

His concert at Arkansas State will include works by Giuliani, Scarlatti, Piazzolla and Asencio.

“The GFA International Competition is one of the top competitions for classical guitar in the world.  The winners of the GFA are always world-class guitarists and some of the most impressive young musicians in the world,” Dr. Crist added. “Vladimir Gorbach, 2011 GFA Winner, is no exception and has become one of the most sought-after guitarists in the world.  His virtuosic skill and depth of musicianship will no doubt leave a tremendous impression on all those who come to his concert.”

A featured performer for some of the most highly regarded concert organizations, festivals, and musical institutions in the world, Gorbach has performed on the Moscow Philharmonic Concert Series, at the Koblenz International Guitar Festival, and for the Sydney Crow’s Nest Concert Cycle.  He also has been a soloist with orchestras such as the Orchestra de Las Beiras and Orchestra de Aveiro in Portugal and the Russian Academic Chamber Orchestra “Musica Viva.”

Gorbach grew up in Siberia, Russia, and graduated with honors from the Music College of Novosibirsk, the city where he was born.  At a young age he received recognition for his accomplishments with prizes at numerous youth competitions, and he later received scholarships from such prestigious sources as the Russian Ministry of Culture.  He later left Russia to complete his Bachelor and Masters degrees at the famed Conservatory for Music and Dance in Cologne, Germany.

He has since had live and recorded performances broadcast in Eastern and Western Europe.  As a soloist, Vladimir Gorbach has recorded a CD with Naxos, the world’s largest classical label.  He also is a member of Duo Cologne along with Goran Krivokapic, the 2005 winner of the Guitar Foundation of America International competition.
