Military Science Commissions Eight New Army Officers

JONESBORO – The Department of Military Science and Leadership at Arkansas State University commissioned eight ROTC cadets into the U. S. Army or Army National Guard Friday in a ceremony attended by family, friends and university staff.
The eight new officers also received their university diplomas Saturday during Arkansas State’s Spring Commencement.
Retired Brig. Gen. Charles D. Martin, U.S. Army Reserve, was guest speaker for the officer commissioning ceremony. Before he retired last month, Martin served the past three years as deputy commanding general of the 416th Theater Engineer Command in Darien, Illinois.
Lt. Col. Cecil L. Clark, professor of military science and department chair, administered the oath to the new officers:
- Cadet Daniel Chappell of Dexter, Missouri, was commissioned as second lieutenant into active Army, Infantry Branch. Chappell earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, with minors in military science, accounting and communication studies. He was pinned with his gold bars by his father, Alan Chappell, and his mother, Carla Boxdorfer.
- Cadet Jordan Gibbs of St. Louis was commissioned as second lieutenant into the Missouri National Guard, Transportation Branch. Gibbs also is an interdisciplinary studies major, with minors in military science, business and health. He was pinned by his mother, Yolanda Lockhart, and his sister, India Gibbs.
- Cadet Kyle Haynes of West Helena was commissioned as second lieutenant into active Army, Chemical Branch. He earned his degree in interdisciplinary studies, with minors in military science, criminology, and disaster preparedness. He was pinned by his mother, Shelley Haynes, and his wife, Sarah.
- Cadet Justin Mangrum of Jonesboro was commissioned as second lieutenant into the Arkansas National Guard, Engineer Branch. His major was interdisciplinary studies, with minors in military science, business and sociology. He was pinned by his father, John Mangrum, his mother, Sherry Mangrum, and his sister, Sarah Mangrum.
- Cadet Alexander Myren of Cherokee Village was commissioned as second lieutenant into the Army Reserve, Military Intelligence Branch. Myren completed his bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a minor in military science. He was pinned by his father, Jonathan Myren, his grandmother, Heidi Myren, and his friend, Lindel Turner.
- Cadet Isaiah Washington of New Orleans was commissioned as second lieutenant into the Arkansas National Guard, Ordnance Branch. He was an interdisciplinary studies major, with a military science minor. He was pinned by Lt. Col. Clark and Maj. Brian Mason.
- Cadet William Winn of Jonesboro was commissioned as second lieutenant into the Arkansas National Guard, Military Police Branch. An interdisciplinary studies major, he minored in military science, exercise science and health science. He was pinned by his father, Perry Winn.
- Cadet Adam Wright of Beebe was commissioned as second lieutenant into the Arkansas National Guard, Infantry Branch. His major was criminology, and his minor was military science. He was pinned by his mother, Leah Kloss.
