Miss America 2014 to Visit A-State as Speaker for Women’s History Month Conference
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University is observing and celebrating National Women’s History Month through a series of programs and events, including the third annual Women’s History Month Conference and Living Legends Luncheon.
Miss Nina Davuluri, Miss America 2014, will be the guest speaker for this year’s luncheon, which opens the conference on Thursday, March 13. Activities continue until 5 p.m. in the Carl R. Reng Student Union.
“We are excited to have Miss America 2014 deliver the keynote address for the Women’s History Month Conference,” commented Candence Williams, program coordinator for A-State’s Multicultural Center. “Her personal platform, celebrating diversity through cultural competency, reflects the mission of our center.”
Miss America launched a social media campaign, “Circles of Unity,” through which she encourages constructive and civil dialogue on diversity issues.
She also works closely with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the Miss American Organization’s platform partner, and is an ambassador for STEM initiatives to help get more young women involved in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.
Davuluri, a graduate of the University of Michigan, is the first Indian-American and second Asian-American to become Miss America. She competed in the national pageant as Miss New York. Her talent, “Classical Bollywood Fusion,” was the first of its kind in the history of the competition.
This “girl next door,” as she likes to call herself, travels about 20,000 miles per month performing her duties as Miss America. Her career goal is to become a physician.
The national Women’s History Month theme, “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment,” honors the extraordinary and often unrecognized determination and tenacity of women.
The Women’s History Month conference is free to A-State students, faculty, and staff, but those interested in attending must register at www.astate.edu/multiculturalcenter.
