10/30/2013

JONESBORO – The Department of Music at Arkansas State University will present the University Choirs in concert on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Fowler Center, Riceland Hall.

The University/Community Choir is under the direction of Dr. Dale Miller, professor of music and director of choral activities at A-State. University Men’s and Women’s Choirs are under the direction of Sean Pollock, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Kyle Chandler, assistant professor of music. This concert is free and open to the public.

The A-State Men’s Choir selections include “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men” by Gerald Finzi; “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl; “Bound for the Rio Grande” arranged by Robert Shaw; “Maria” by Leonard Bernstein; and “Ride On, King Jesus” arranged by Howard Helvey.

The A-State Vocal Jazz group will perform “But Beautiful” by Burke and Van Heusen and arranged by Steve Zegree; “Orange Colored Sky” by DeLugg and Steen and arranged by Jim Elsberry; “Route 66” by Bobby Troup and arranged by Tom O’Connor and Kyle Chandler; and “This Masquerade” by Leon Russell and arranged by Kirby Shaw.

The A-State Women’s Choir selections include “Canticle of Mary” by Jeffrey L. Ames; “Hello Girls” by “Lloyd Pfautsch; “Loch Lomand” from “Set of Three Scottish Songs” arranged by James Mulholland; “O Pastorello, Addio” from “Andrea Chenier” by Umberto Giordani; and “Son de Camaguey” by Stephen Hatfield.

The A-State University/Community Choir is a blended chorus of university students, and high school through retirement-aged singers from the area. The group rehearses once per week with Dr. Miller, and some of them will accompany the ASU Choir on a tour of Spain in March. Since March 2000 members of the choir have performed in conjunction with the ASU Men’s, Women’s, and Concert Choirs with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, in Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, and on tour in Italy.

Their selections will include “Celebrate Music” by Joseph Martin, “O Crux Benedicta” by Jose’ Guerrero, “Ave Maria” and “Esta Tierra” by Javier Busto, “I’m a Sinner Man” by Vicky Courtney, and “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” by Moses Hogan.

Any area singer interested in joining the University/Community Choir when it resumes in the spring semester or traveling to Spain during spring break should contact Dr. Miller at (870) 972-3841.
