'Nanotechnology: What’s the Big Deal?' on Exhibit at Museum
JONESBORO – "Nanotechnology: What’s the Big Deal?" now displayed in Arkansas State University Museum’s main gallery, illustrates how nanoparticles reveal very unexpected properties.
Scientists observe that at the nanoscale, materials show unique properties and often rely on self-assembly techniques to form useable technology. Visitors are invited to come explore this concept of nano-scale self-assembly by watching floating “molecules” move themselves into an orderly pattern on an air hockey table. Also, guests may manipulate the size of a quantum dot to see its strange, changing properties, “cure” a cancerous tumor with “nano gold particles,” and more.
"Nanotechnology: What’s the Big Deal?" is an Arkansas Discovery Network exhibit, created by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education (NISE) Network with support from the National Science Foundation and funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. ASU Museum’s display of this exhibit is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
The exhibit will continue on display at ASU Museum through August. Jill Kary, curator of education, invites the public to visit and experience the grandest exhibit for the smallest science.
