New Public Programming Coming to Bradbury Art Museum
JONESBORO – “Poetry Night at BAM” will be the first event in a new series of programs at Bradbury Art Museum. This series will feature diverse programming and provide extended hours to increase accessibility for visitors.
A variety of artistic, scholarly and entertaining events are planned throughout the fall. BAM is located in Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Dr., on the campus of Arkansas State University.
On Thursday, Sept. 21, the museum will open its doors at 6 p.m. allowing visitors time to see the current exhibitions and find a seat. At 6:30 the poetry reading will begin.
Featured will be Pushcart Prize-nominated poet Scott McDaniel. He will read from his in-progress poetry collection, which reflects on the unique hues, quirks and promises of the modern South. When completed, this new set of poems will be divided into three sections, dealing with concept, character sketches and a narrative about the two.
The renowned poet, Miller Williams, McDaniel's cousin, encouraged him to begin writing poetry at an early age. Since then McDaniel has been or will be featured in numerous publications, including Mad Swirl, Deep South Magazine, Oberon Poetry Magazine, Common Ground Review and The New Guard.
McDaniel has read throughout his home state of Arkansas as well as in New York City and Castletownroche, Ireland. He lives and works in Jonesboro.
Two young poets will open the evening by reading samples of their work.
Sarah Moore, a senior at Arkansas State University, will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in May. As a future educator she plans to use her knowledge and love for poetry and writing to inspire her students and to create a positive outlet in their lives.
Also reading will be Gavin Anderson, a current A-State student, who will share some of his recent poems. The evening will conclude with an open microphone, allowing the audience to present works of their own.
Meditation, Sept. 26
A second event in the series, “Meditation at the Museum,” will be Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. Presenters Christopher Earnhart, faculty developer and trainer, in the A-State Faculty Center, and Shannon Smithee, education curator at BAM, will provide an introduction to meditation practices and how they pertain to creativity and observing art in the museum. Breakout sessions will include guided meditation and a meditative art project.
Currently on display at BAM is the “2017 Faculty Biennial” featuring art by Nikki Arnell, Cameron Buckley, Joe Ford, John Norris, Robert McCarroll, Bill Rowe, John Salvest, Kimberly Boyd Vickrey, Susan Whiteland and Melissa Wilkinson.
Also on view are “World Upside Down” by Shelley Gipson, “The Catastrophe of the Present” by Claudia Salamanca, “Wild Things” by Cara Sullivan, and “Vivid Life,” a posthumous tribute to Roger Carlisle. The exhibitions all run through Friday, Sept. 29.
