Phi Beta Lambda chapter excels at state competition; local student elected as state president

Students from Arkansas State University’s College of Business Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter won 24 awards and ASU chapter president Andrew Todd was elected as the state president for 2012-13, at the State of Arkansas’ Phi Beta Lambda Spring Conference and Competition held in Little Rock, April 12-14.

Fourteen ASU students and three advisers from the College of Business represented ASU at the conference. Todd is a junior double major in both accounting and finance from Fort Smith. As a result of their achievements, 12 students are eligible to represent ASU and the state of Arkansas in a total of 11 events at the 2012 National Phi Beta Lambda Leadership Conference and Competition in San Antonio, Texas in June.

Dr. Len Frey, dean of the ASU College of Business, praised the efforts of the students and their advisors—each one a faculty member in the College of Business. 

“I am so pleased with the progress that our Phi Beta Lambda Chapter has made over the past three years,” said Dr. Frey. “Dr. Philip Tew, assistant professor of finance, Dr. Terry Roach, professor of business communications and Patricia Robertson, associate professor of business law and department chair of economics and finance, have breathed new life into this organization and have led our students to successes not before experienced. 

“Dr. Kanu Priya, assistant professor of management, was a key addition to the PBL advisory team this year. The students and advisors are great reflections of the positive direction that not only our College of Business, but the entire university is heading.”

Eric Goetz, a junior accounting and finance major from Wynne, won first place inBusiness Law. Lavenita Armstrong, a senior economics and finance major fromJonesboro, won fourth place in Client Service and third place in Macroeconomics. Molly Bryson, a junior psychology major from Jonesboro, won third place in Computer Applications and first place in Word Processing. 

Randy Riddle, a junior computer and information technology major from Vilonia, won third place in Cyber Security and was a member of the first place Parliamentary Procedure team. Mallory Perry, a freshman international business major fromOmaha, Arkansas, was a member of the fourth place Community Service Projectteam and a member of the first place Desktop Publishing team. Brett Harris, a freshman management major from Mountain View, was a member of the first place Desktop Publishing team and was a member of the first place Parliamentary Procedure team. 

William Beasley, a senior finance major from Harrisburg, won second place in Financial Services and third place in Financial Concepts. Gonglei “Ken” Zheng, a senior finance major from Shanghai, China, won first place in Macroeconomics, second place in Financial Concepts, and fourth place in Computer Operating Systems. MalloryGreen, a sophomore accounting and finance major from Jonesboro, was a member of the first place Parliamentary Procedure team and the fourth place CommunityService Project team. 

Aaron Carroll, a senior chemistry major from Jonesboro, was a member of the firstplace Parliamentary Procedure team. Sarita Robinson, a senior marketing major from Little Rock, won fourth place in Sales Presentation. Rinda Pinkley-Hall, a senior business technology major from Searcy, won first place in Business Communications and first place in Future Business Teacher. 

In addition to being elected as state president, Andrew Todd won first place in Financial Concepts and was a member of the first place Parliamentary Procedure team. He has served as the ASU chapter president for both the 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.

The ASU chapter was one of two chapters in the state of Arkansas to receive Gold Seal Chapter status and was recognized for being the second largest chapterwithin the state of Arkansas. Phi Beta Lambda is the collegiate version of Future Business Leaders of America. FBLA-PBL is the largest and oldest business student organization in the world. The mission of FBLA-PBL is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.
