Red Wolf Rugby Rebounds With Win At Clemson

02/17/2018

CLEMSON, S.C. — Arkansas State University scored two tries in the second half to come from behind and defeat Clemson University, 14-10, Saturday afternoon in men’s college rugby. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak by the Red Wolves.

“It feels good, but there is still plenty of work to do,” said Blake White, A-State had coach. “We showed this week that we can play in tight games.”

After trailing 3-0, Tanner Pope scored the try in the second half with the conversion by Val Balande, to lift Arkansas State to the 7-3 lead. Clemson’s Hunter Dawsey was able to score to put the Tigers back up, 10-7. Shortly after, the Red Wolves controlled the ball again, allowing Zach Young to score. Brock Roper nailed the conversion for the final score.

To close out the game, the ball was deemed unplayable, so with no time remaining, the game was ruled complete, giving A-State the win.

“We played very well, we just couldn’t capitalize when it came time to execute,” continued White. “Clemson is a very tough team who plays with a great amount of heart and is very well coached. They know what they’re good at and stick to it.”

Arkansas State will take off next weekend and return to play Saturday, March 3, and travel to St. Charles, Mo., for a rematch with Lindenwood University. The two faced each other Feb. 10 in Jonesboro with Lindenwood handing a 24-5 loss to the Red Wolves.
