Senior Art Exhibitions, Featuring Works by Six, Open April 13
JONESBORO – “Soup” and “Salad,” the spring 2023 Senior Exhibitions, will open at Bradbury Art Museum (BAM) at Arkansas State University with a reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 13.
Admission to the reception and exhibition, which continues through April 28, is free.
Work by six graduating Arkansas-based seniors from the Department of Art + Design will be included: Christian Adams of Mountain View, A. Skylar Evans of Austin, Loretta Lyon of Jonesboro, Salem Newton of Paragould, Youssef Sheroubi of Jonesboro and Cassie Watson of Jonesboro.
The senior exhibition represents the culmination of the students’ time as BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) artists, acting as a visual thesis, and is a major milestone for the graduating seniors.
The spring 2023 Senior Exhibitions will be taking place as two coinciding group exhibitions. “Soup” is an exhibition of art by Evans, Lyon and Sheroubi. “Salad” brings together the work of Adams, Newton and Watson.
Christian Adams explores her attraction to horror and the human form in her current studio based in Jonesboro. She hopes to open a new studio in her hometown of Mountain View, where she will focus her time on her studio work and building exhibitions.
A. Skylar Evans, whose emphasis is photography, primarily works in black and white film photography, along with various other photography mediums, ink work, and printmaking. Evans also manages the darkroom and photography lab resources, such as the large format printer and film scanner.
Loretta Lyon has a background in psychology, health and art. Lyon’s recent work incorporates research of taboo subcultures and psychology into personalized narrative pieces that illustrate group members’ experiences and struggles while building connections between the subject and viewer.
Salem Newton, who also enjoys creative writing, works with acrylic and oil paint, exhibiting an art style that is a personal blend of surrealism and expressionism.
Youssef Sheroubi, born in Cairo, Egypt, pursued an emphasis in painting. His work of neo-surrealism and psychedelic subjects are inspired by his multicultural background. After graduation he plans to work on community-based projects and start a skateboarding and fashion line based in Northeast Arkansas.
Cassie Watson is a fine art photographer. After graduation, she plans to continue her work with both fine art and commercial practices in photography. Cassie plans to base her business, Photography by C. Lee, here in NEA, and give back to the community and her roots.
A curated group exhibition titled “Fragments & Fabrications” will also be opening on April 13 and will be on view alongside the senior exhibitions.
BAM is in Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
