Social Work Department to Help Sponsor Community Event
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s Department of Social Work senior class and A-State CARE will join The Power of 1 or 2, Inc. to host a “Spring Into Action Community Event,” Saturday, March 31, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the University Heights Lions Club Park located at 502 ½ North Bridge Street, behind the Success Achievement Academy.
This is the second year for the community awareness neighborhood health event. It is an opportunity for music, games, food, fun, local resources and other activities for the community to participate in.
“A-State CARE has begun a process of making a difference in children and families’ lives in north Jonesboro, through programs such as tutoring and literacy agendas,” stated Julia Chance, a senior in the social work department. “Not only is the mission of A-State CARE to provide outreach services to residents in north Jonesboro, but also the social work department is strongly committed to raising community awareness on issues that impact the well-being of families in Northeast Arkansas communities.”
The A-State CARE (Community Action Reinforcing Empowerment) program was created in 2010 by the Department of Social Work to focus on identifying resident needs and concerns in north Jonesboro, and to assist individuals in prioritizing their needs necessary for positive outcomes.
The Power of 1 and 2, Inc. is a non-profit organization created by former A-State football player Blaise Taylor and his sister Starr, a member of A-State’s women’s basketball team, to work with underprivileged children. Blaise wore No. 1 on his jersey and Starr wears No. 2.
“It is our goal for this event to engage community members, businesses, organizations and agencies to take part in this event and bring awareness to Jonesboro residents of the many opportunities the city and A-State CARE have to offer to north Jonesboro,” concluded Chance.
